Tips from the pros to help streamline your cleaning process.

Need your home to be spotless for a special occasion or do you just want to keep your space looking and smelling good? Bringing in a professional cleaner may not always be an option. Luckily, these tips from the pros can help streamline your cleaning process.

Start With Dusting

Since dust will fall during cleaning, pros usually work top to bottom.

For cleaning dusty fan blades, try using an old pillowcase. With the fan turned off, place the pillowcase around the blade and pull the dust off.

There’s no need to use furniture polish every time you dust. A microfiber cloth or damp rag should work just as well.

Don’t forget the houseplants. Depending on the type of leaves, either wipe with a damp cloth or use a soft bristle paint brush (this is best for fuzzy leaves).

Move On to Vacuuming

Rushing through vacuuming means you’re done faster, but it might not get you the best result.

Go slowly, and move horizontally and then vertically. Hitting the carpet from both directions gives you a better chance at picking up all the dust or pet hair.

Try soaking a cotton ball with an essential oil and put it into your vacuum. As you clean, the scent will be released throughout your home.

Cleaning Your Kitchen

Chefs have a whole team to clean up after them, but you probably don’t have that luxury.

One thing the pros recommend: Clean as you go. If you do, you won’t be stuck with a sink full of dirty dishes after your meal.

If the walls of your microwave are less than pristine, soak a kitchen towel in water and cook it for half a minute. The steam will help loosen the food particles, making surfaces easier to wipe down.

Be smart about cleaning, especially when your time is limited: Hit the high-traffic areas first and then work your way to less used spaces as you have time.
