5 Durable and Attractive Flooring Options

Ready to pick out new flooring? Likely, an updated appearance is one reason you’re planning to renovate. But looks aren’t everything. You want flooring that will last, especially in high-traffic areas. Here are some suggestions for picking an attractive, durable material for your space.

Hardwood
Hardwood flooring is a classic look for any house and can be used in almost every room. Hardwood isn’t usually recommended for bathrooms because of the moisture, but with the right finish it makes a great option for kitchens. The downsides: Hardwood can get scratched and can warp in high-humidity climates. Cost and maintenance should be factored into your decision.

Tile
Want flooring that’s more durable and looks great in just about any space? Consider tile. It comes in a wide variety of materials from natural stone to ceramic. Note that tile is tough and easy to clean, but it can crack with heavy impacts.

Carpet
Although hardwood and tile are popular flooring options, carpet remains a popular option. Drafty and second-floor rooms can benefit from the insulating and sound-dampening qualities of carpet. Nylon carpet is sturdy, stain-resistant and relatively cheap. Other types of carpet are available but vary in cost and durability.

Concrete
Substantial and inexpensive, concrete can be stained to take on a variety of colors and hues. Concrete floors are built to last but may need resealing every few years. Tip: Make sure the sealant contains an anti-slip additive.

Linoleum
Linoleum is a good option for high-moisture rooms like the bathroom, laundry room or kitchen. It’s reliable — lasting decades with proper care — and is very easy to maintain. As a bonus, linoleum is recyclable and biodegradable.

While these certainly aren’t the only good flooring options out there, hopefully, this gives you a place to start.
